Unless you want a serious plumbing problem, please don’t pour grease, fats, or oils down your sinks. Fats, Oils, and Grease come from meats, butters and margarine, lard, food scraps, sauces, salad dressings, dairy products, and cooking oil. In our areas, we have many ethnic backgrounds that use a lot of these ingredients, so care must be taken when disposing of these highly used ingredients.
When grease goes down the drain, it hardens and will cause your sewer pipes to clog; which may lead to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) where raw sewage actually backs up into your home, lawn, neighborhood, and streets. Not only does this nasty mess cause health issues, it also can run into a nearby stream or river which affects our drinking water. If your pipes become clogged from putting grease down the drain, it can be very expensive problem to fix and the resident may be held liable for the expense. Trust me, it’s not cheap! We’ve had to replace pipes at some of our properties for various reasons and the costs were in the thousands of dollars. To avoid household, environmental damage, as well as a costly bill, NEVER put fats, oils or GREASE down the drain!
I’m not sure how you like your Thanksgiving turkey, but my brother-in-law makes a mean fried turkey. Once he’s done cooking and the grease has cooled down, we DO NOT don’t pour the greasdon’t pour grease from frying turkeys down the draine down the drain. We use the same containers the grease came in and if it doesn’t fit we’ll pour the remaining grease into a resealable container. There’s always a small amount that sticks, so we wipe the pan clean with a paper towel and put it in the trash. Whatever food scraps we can’t give to the dog goes in the trash. Sometimes we’ll even let the dog lick off the plates, but when we don’t, we scrape off the excess food from pots, pans, and plates before rinsing them in the sink with cold water. Avoid using hot water to wash off any excess grease
Thanks to the folks at North Texas Grease Abatement Council for their permission to use the information in this week’s blog – www.ceasethegreasentx.com.
Below is some great information from the SWA on how and where to dispose of Grease properly. As a resident if the cause of any plumbing issues is due to your failure to follow proper disposal of grease, you could be held liable for all costs incurred.
